This past weekend my partner and our two pups spent a sunny day in Cold Spring, NY. Cold Spring exudes small town charm, with antique stores and quirky little shops lining the center of town. Located in Putnam County about 50 miles north of New York City, it is one of the cutest towns - set on the Hudson River, with Storm King Mountain looming in the distance, the views are beautiful, making it the perfect day trip escape.
And for those without a car, most of the town and hiking trails are easily accessible by foot, and the center of town is just a 5-minute walk from the Metro-North train station. The train trip from NYC takes just over an hour on the Metro-North Hudson line.
With its many speciality shops lining Main Street, we easily spent the afternoon walking around and checking out the different stores. There’s Old Souls, an outdoor-themed shop carrying products for camping. Cold Spring General Store is also worth a visit - a store with a little bit of everything. The shop focuses on handmade, American goods that have a story behind them and work with many of the regions local artisans. Last, perhaps one of the most Instagram-worthy spaces we’ve ever visited is Cold Spring Apothecary, stocked with lovely beauty products but also a coffee shop. Stop in to fill your medicine cabinet with the best of the best or to grab a cup of cold brew on a hot day.
For brunch, we ate at Hudson Hil's Cafe & Market. It’s a very popular breakfast/lunch joint, that uses fresh local ingredients and has outdoor seating for dogs. Thankfully we ate early and didn’t have to wait but later in the day we saw a long line out the door. The good news is that if it’s busy, you can duck in to their “market” and get an order to go.
Besides all the shopping, Cold Spring is most often visited to hike Breakneck Ridge. It’s a very popular trail, due to its short, but steep hike, giving way to some really incredible views of the Hudson Valley. Despite its difficulty rating, the trail is always crowded, as we saw with all the cars parked along the bottom of the trail and hikers making their ascent and descent.
Can’t say enough about Cold Spring, NY – if you’re in the mood for small town charm, with an incredible setting and backdrop, go!
